Rihanna – The early years

Rihanna is a super talented singer from the Barbados (an exotic Caribbean island). She was born on February 20 1988 in St. Michael. She is the first of three children. Her father Ronald was of Irish Barbadian descent and her mother Monica was Guyanese. After finishing school at 2004 (she finished Combermere) her big music adventure started! Just notice that she had already won some talent and beauty contests in her school. She had a unique passion and talent for singing and her parents didn’t cause any problem for her to follow her passion.

How did it all start?

Music Producers Evan Rogers (he was in vacation to Barbados) and Carl Sturpken discovered Rihanna and helped her create a demo. The demo was send to many companies including Def Jam. Rihanna had an audition for Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter (President of Def Jam) and immediately signed. Her performance was so impressive that her future bosses “forced” her to sign before she leaves their office. She remembers: “We were there until 4:30 in the morning closing the deal. Every time I signed my name I was just smiling."

Music of the Sun

That was the starting point of a great career!! Now Rihanna is considered to be the Next Big Thing. Her sweet temper, her attractive voice and appearance gave her many advantages. So her music debut was a huge success. It was titled “Music of the Sun”. She had one of the most popular 2005 singles with “Pon De Replay”. The timing was also great. The album was released in summer (August 2005) and summer is ideal for Rihanna’s music.. a sexy mixture of Reggae, RnB and Dancehall. It is important to say that she was co writer and not just singer to her debut album. Music of the Sun sold 1 million copies! After this huge success Rihanna toured with Gwen Steffani. She made big crowds in Japan to dance with her, she posed for many magazines and also had her first movie appearance (Bring It On Yet Again). It was so much for her that she admits: "I grew up so much this past year. I had no choice. To pursue my dreams, and with their support, I left my entire family in Barbados to move to the States. It was a little scary to have no friends or family and all of a sudden step into a recording studio"

A Girl Like Me

Her next step was even more successful (!!). She got to the studio and recorded her second album! 8 months after the hot “Music of the Sun” Rihanna is back with her album “A Girl Like Me”. The release date was April 25 2006. The album reached higher in the charts than her debut! Her popularity grew even more. The album has already sold 1.217.000 copies!

Unfaithfull, SOS, Break it off, the singles of A Girl Like Me

The album gave 4 (!) singles. S.O.S. and Unfaithfull (her third Top Ten hit)are the most successful of them! Besides she had a duet with famous Sean Paul for the single “Break it off”. Rihanna recalls: "I have so much respect and love for Sean Paul. He took me to visit the Bob Marley Museum before going into the studio, which was an amazing experience. When we finally got to the studio, I felt as though Marley's spirit was in the room with us." So it seems that it wasn’t just a burst. Her second album comes to prove that she is a great singer and excellent show woman. It is the second summer that the world feels the vibes of the young and beautiful Rihanna! Good Luck Rihanna
